Online plant sales are skyrocketing

September 10 2020

From March through May, searches for online plant purchases were nearly four times as high as last year. Yet, only about 6% of total garden plant purchases are made online. "That's well below the average of 24% for all garden products. If you see that, there's still a lot of potential," says Den Bosch entrepreneur Maikel Dekkers, who works with www.plantcentraal.nl recently launched a webshop for plants.

Buying plants online has grown considerably this summer

Discovered buying plants online

The effects of COVID-19 measures are certainly visible in the increase. You can see that there has been less in-person shopping and more online purchases. However, Dekkers also expects a structural effect. "A new group has now become acquainted with online shopping, and plants in particular. Online shopping is already commonplace in many industries. This wasn't the case with plants, but nowadays there are even special shipping boxes. This means your plant will always arrive in perfect condition on your doorstep and is also a nice 'gift' to yourself. This awareness will reach a tipping point in the coming years, and we are responding to that."

More greenery in the home against Corona

"We're also seeing a growing understanding that indoor plants are good for your health." Many houseplants, such as the Golden Orangutan and Dragon Tree, purify the air and improve indoor air quality. They protect themselves, but also everyone in the house! Rooms with plants have up to 60% fewer bacteria in the air. "That gives people a sense of calm, especially now that good air circulation is recommended to combat the coronavirus."

Plants directly from the grower

The entrepreneur from Den Bosch sells with the webshop www.plantcentraal.nl Garden plants, houseplants, and flowers. The products are shipped directly from affiliated growers to your home. "This way, the plant journey is much shorter, and your plants arrive extra fresh. Plus, you don't have to cram all those plants from the garden center into your car, which you can then vacuum. People want convenience, and we offer that with this proposition."
