Want to buy and care for a pancake plant (Pilea)?
Want to buy a pancake plant? This Pilea peperomioides plant is back in style and is making a comeback! The pancake plant originates from China and was brought to Europe in the early 20th century. The plant has striking round leaves that resemble the shape of a pancake, hence the name pancake plant. The plant is a succulent plant (succulent), because it retains and stores water in these leaves.
Pancake plant care and watering
The pancake plant is an easy houseplant. Water it regularly, making sure the soil doesn't dry out for too long, but stays slightly moist. Watering once a week is enough. The plant doesn't tolerate being left dry for too long or overwatered. You'll then see the leaves turn yellow. Try adjusting your watering accordingly. The lower leaves will eventually turn yellow, but that's not a problem. You can simply remove these from the plant, as new leaves are constantly growing!
Place the plant in a bright spot; a little shade is also fine. Make sure the plant doesn't get too much direct sunlight. If your pancake plant is in a window, move it to a different location in the summer.
Propagating pancake plants
The Chinese money plant is known for being easy to propagate! This is because small, new plants can naturally grow around it. After a while, when they're a bit bigger, you can carefully detach these. You can also try this with a stem with leaves. First, place the cutting in a glass of water that you refresh regularly. After a while, you'll see roots forming, and then the cutting can be planted in soil. This way, you don't have to buy a new Chinese money plant; you can simply propagate your own!
