Make sure the potting soil is always slightly moist, but not too wet. By watering the plant regularly in small amounts, you prevent water from accumulating at the bottom of the pot. Too much water can cause root rot. Incidentally, the Alocasia will let you know if it's getting too much water. The plant will then "sweat," creating small droplets of water on the leaves. If you see these droplets, give it a little less water. The plant prefers high humidity. Where do I put my plant?
Place the Elephant Ear in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight. Especially not in a spot with afternoon sun. You can, however, place this plant in a spot with morning or evening sun. If the stems grow longer than average, then it's in a spot that's too dark. By lengthening the stems, the plant hopes to capture more light. Make sure your plant is not in a draft, as the Alocasia prefers a warm spot. Also, don't place the plant near a heater, as the air there is far too dry.
