Popular orchid species
Orchids come in many different colors and shapes. So many, in fact, that there are over 25.000 species! The most popular varieties are the Phalaenopsis orchid and the Dendrobium orchid. Below, we discuss some of the most popular orchid varieties.
- Cambria orchid. This is a cross between several plants. Therefore, this species does not occur in nature.
- Dendrobium orchid. The dendrobium species does occur in nature, growing on trees and rocks. This is also where the name comes from. Dendron is the Greek word for tree.
- Miltonia orchid. This species is also called the "pansy orchid" and grows naturally along riverbanks.
- Oncidium orchid. This 'Tiger Orchid' grows on trees and in rock crevices. This species prefers a cool environment.
- Phalaenopsis orchid. The most popular and well-known orchid species is the Phalaenopsis. This species is also called the "butterfly orchid" and originally grows on trees. This orchid originates from the jungles of New Guinea and Australia. Its blooming period is very long: up to three months at a time.
Orchid care
Caring for your orchid? Place the plant in a bright spot, but out of direct sunlight. Keep it away from drafts and above a radiator. The ideal temperature is between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. Keep it away from fruit, as this produces ripening gases that cause the flowers to wilt faster.
Watering an orchid
How often should you water your orchid? This varies by species! In general, water your orchid only when the soil is almost dry. Depending on the species, this can vary from every 7 to 14 days. Immerse the plant in lukewarm (preferably) rainwater, let it soak for 10 minutes, and then let it drain thoroughly. After this, the orchid can easily go without water for a while. Make sure there's no standing water in the decorative pot, as orchids don't like wet feet. A little orchid food once a month is also appreciated by the plant.
