Buying and caring for fruit plants

The climate in the Netherlands is perfect for growing fruit! Just think of the many orchards of apples, pears, and cherries in our country. You can do it yourself! Because what's better than picking your own fruit fresh from your own garden? Make yogurt with your own raspberries or mulberries! Or harvest your own kiwis to make a smoothie!

Fruit plants in pots

Do you have a smaller garden or balcony? Then choose potted fruit plants! They're also easy to move if necessary. Fruit plants like raspberries, but also some cherries, apples, and plums thrive in a (large) pot. Strawberries are best hung, for example, from a fence, under a canopy, or on your balcony.

When to plant fruit trees?

What's the ideal time to plant fruit plants or fruit trees? The ideal time to plant varies by plant type, but the dormant period is often the most ideal. This is often from autumn to spring. Below are the ideal planting periods for each fruit type.

  • It is best to plant an apple tree, pear tree, plum tree, cherry tree and other fruit trees from early November to late March.
  • Berry bushes and grape vines can be planted all year round, but the most ideal time is in autumn or spring
  • Mediterranean plants, such as citrus plants and olive trees, are best planted in spring, summer or autumn.
  • It is best to plant strawberries in the spring
  • Caring for fruit plants

Fruit needs plenty of sun and water to grow. So make sure your fruit plants are well-sunlit. Also, make sure they get enough water, preferably daily. Ideally, water your fruit plants early in the evening; this way, the water evaporates less quickly and the plant can absorb it better.

    Harvesting fruit

Fruit is usually harvested in summer or autumn when it's ripe. This depends on the type of fruit and, for example, the spring temperatures. Generally, you can easily tell when your fruit is ready to be picked by its color! Below are some tips for harvesting popular fruits.

    Harvesting and caring for strawberries

Strawberries grow well outdoors in spring and summer. Add some high-potassium fertilizer to the water. You can add this about once a week. You can harvest strawberries throughout the season. When they turn a beautiful red, they're ready to pick! Always pick strawberries with the stems still on to keep them fresh longer.

    Harvesting and caring for blackberries

Blackberries grow in many places in nature, or of course in your garden! Blackberries are usually ready to be picked from July until September. Here too, you should pay attention to the color of the blackberries; when they are beautifully full, you can pick them. Collect the picked blackberries in small containers, for example, to make jam.

    Harvesting and caring for raspberries

Harvesting raspberries often depends heavily on spring. This is because spring temperatures affect ripening. Raspberries are usually harvested in July and August. Pick your raspberries fresh for your yogurt! Always make sure to remove any branches that once held the fruit.
