When to plant climbing roses in your garden?

Climbing roses love a sunny location! You can plant them virtually year-round, as long as there's no frost! However, the best time is October or November. Planting climbing roses in the fall is best because the roots are still developing well in the soft soil. This ensures they thrive in the spring! Of course, you can also plant climbing roses in the spring.

When planting climbing roses, ensure a deep hole; the roots thrive in deep soil. Aim for a depth of half a meter. Meanwhile, place the rose's root ball in a container of water for an hour. It's best to mix the soil with plenty of potting soil for good nutrition. Then, place the rose with the base of the stem just below the soil surface and press firmly.

Pruning and caring for climbing roses

Climbing roses don't naturally attach themselves to a wall or fence, for example. Therefore, they're not really climbers. It's best to give them a little help by tying them up with something like elastic twine. Roses are known for being heavy feeders. Therefore, we recommend feeding them annually with rose fertilizer.

Most climbing roses are pruned in early spring. An exception to this are climbing roses that bloom only once a year; these are pruned after flowering. For optimal growth, it's best to prune the climbing rose back to about 30 centimeters above the ground every other year. The climbing rose will produce new shoots from the main branches in spring.
