How do I care for my flowers?
Step 1. Cut the flowers diagonally
Caring for flowers starts with cutting the stems diagonally. Many people forget to do this regularly. It's best to repeat this every three or four days. Cutting the stems diagonally allows for better water absorption.
Step 2. Notice the leaves
Make sure you remove all leaves that will be submerged. If you don't remove them, they will rot, and the flowers won't tolerate the bacteria that this introduces into the water.
Step 3. Choose a suitable vase
Choose a suitable vase that fits your flowers well. If the vase is too narrow, the stems may be damaged, and your flowers will wilt sooner. Preferably choose a glass vase. Bacteria have less chance to settle in it. Make sure the vase is clean. It's best to rinse it with a drop of bleach beforehand.
Step 4. Provide fresh water
Fill the vase with water. It doesn't have to be hot or ice-cold; regular tap water is fine. Change the water every three days; flowers love fresh water! Always add the flower food packet, too; it keeps the water cleaner longer and provides the stems with nutrients. If your bouquet didn't come with a flower food packet, you can add a drop of bleach to the water to keep it clean.
Step 5. Find a suitable location
To extend the life of your flowers, it's important to display them in a suitable spot. Never place your flowers in direct sunlight; avoid heat and drafts. Don't place your bouquet near a heater, as this causes the flowers to evaporate more moisture than they absorb. A spot near a fruit bowl is also unsuitable. Ripening fruit produces ethylene gas, which causes your flowers to wilt sooner. For example, place your bouquet on a table, away from the fruit bowl, or on a nice cabinet.
Step 6. Remove wilted flowers
After a while, it's inevitable: your flowers will wilt. To keep the rest of your bouquet beautiful longer, you should remove the wilted flowers from the vase as soon as possible. Wilted flowers also produce ethylene, which will cause the rest of your bouquet to wilt faster.
Step 7. Let the flowers get used to the temperature in the house
Is it freezing outside and your heating is on inside? Then there's a big temperature difference, which can shock your flowers. If it's very cold, it's best to put the flowers in a shed, hallway, or utility room first. This way they can slowly adjust to a warmer temperature. If the temperature outside is very high, it's better to choose flowers that can handle the heat well.
