Step-by-step plan for your own moss wall or moss wall
Convinced to get started with moss yourself? Now all you need is the right materials, instructions, and a little creativity! Check out the step-by-step guide below for making your own moss wall.
- First, gather your supplies. For your moss wall, use (a combination of) processed reindeer moss or ball moss, as indicated earlier. Plan on using approximately 4 to 8 kilograms of reindeer moss per square meter. 4 kilograms will cover a square meter if you're not too picky. If you really want to select the most beautiful moss, order 8 kilograms per meter. You'll need 5 crates of ball moss per square meter. A combination is also possible.
- Next, you'll need glue to attach the moss to your wall or, for example, a wooden panel. You can use white wood glue on a wooden panel, but we recommend a contact adhesive like Bison contact adhesive (gel). Apply the glue to both the moss and the wall and let it dry until it becomes tacky before gluing the moss to the wall. Tip: Using a glue gun is also an option and works fastest!
- Choose a location for your moss wall. Keep in mind that even treated moss can discolor if exposed to strong sunlight, for example. So choose a spot in the shade or out of direct sunlight. Moss also thrives in damp places, so avoid placing it directly above a radiator or directly on your underfloor heating. Also see our inspiration for a moss wall indoors!
- Start in a corner and apply a layer of glue to the desired hard surface. Start with a small area, otherwise the glue will dry too quickly. If you're building the moss wall on a separate sheet, lay it horizontally.
- Tear the moss to the desired thickness, checking the moss tufts for twigs and other irregularities as you remove them.
- Apply the moss tufts from the corner where you started and work outward. Make sure to press the moss tufts close together so the substrate is no longer visible.
- If you are using a loose plate, ideally when you are finished you should place another plate with a weight on top of the plastered plate to press the moss down and let it dry overnight.
- Creating a moss wall is a fun weekend project. It takes about a day to cover 2 square meters. So make sure you schedule enough time to finish your green project!
